Unlike most categories on this site, cosmetic peptide research has a genuinely large body of published, mechanism-level evidence behind it — this is one of the better-studied corners of the field.

Compounds commonly studied for cosmetic and skin research

  • GHK-Cu (Copper Peptide) — A naturally occurring tripeptide (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine) bound to copper, first isolated from human plasma in 1973. It’s among the most extensively studied cosmetic peptides in existence — research has documented effects on collagen and elastin synthesis, wound healing, and — more recently — broad epigenetic gene modulation (one 2023 clinical study found GHK-Cu influences activity in roughly 31% of studied human genes). GHK naturally declines with age, which is part of what’s driven sustained research interest in topical replacement.
  • PTD-DBM — A peptide developed at Yonsei University that disrupts the interaction between CXXC5 and Disheveled, a negative-feedback brake on the Wnt/β-catenin pathway that drives hair follicle formation. In mouse studies, topical application stimulated visible hair regrowth and even triggered formation of entirely new follicles at wound sites. Preclinical only — evidence is limited to animal models.
  • SNAP-8 (Acetyl Octapeptide-3) — A synthetic octapeptide that works like a gentler, topical cousin of Botox: it competes with your body’s own SNAP-25 protein for a spot in the SNARE complex, reducing the neurotransmitter release that drives repeated-expression wrinkles (forehead lines, crow’s feet). An extended, ~30% more active analog of the earlier peptide Argireline. Reversible and non-invasive — a modulation effect, not paralysis.
  • Melanotan I — Flagged above: FDA-approved since 2019 as Scenesse (afamelanotide), for erythropoietic protoporphyria. Selectively activates MC1R, driving melanin production with a well-documented Phase 3 evidence base (median 69.4 pain-free sun-exposure hours vs. 40.8 on placebo). Melanotan II — Cross-listed from Sexual Health: same non-selective MC1R/MC3R/MC4R activity drives its tanning effect here, alongside the arousal effect covered on the other page.
